The Maldives is among the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate change. We want our ambition to meet the full scale of this challenge, and to be a leader in reducing carbon emissions. With the current assistance and resources available we are on track to reduce a quarter of our emissions by 2030. While this is a positive start, we believe we have a responsibility to take a more transformational economic and environmental path. That is why we aim to reach net-zero by 2030 on the condition we receive the extensive support we need. To reach this goal we will need the realization of the financial and technical assistance that has been pledged to countries such as ours over many decades.

We will continue to work towards our long-term strategy of net zero by initiatives such as increasing the percentage of renewable energy used for power generation and exploring alternative solutions to reduce our emissions, including through stronger incentives and legislation.

The Maldives will do all that it can to address the climate emergency. We call on the international community to do the same, and provide access, especially to SIDS, for much needed consistent financial assistance so that we can meet our targets, and secure a 1.5 degree world.

Thank you.
