President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed departed on Monday for Kolhufushi Island in the Meemu Atoll to attend ceremonies to mark National Unity Day. The day is observed in remembrance of the spirit of national unity and solidarity shown by the people in the immediate aftermath of the devastating Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004.

On Kolhufushi Island, the President will unveil a monument in memory of the lives lost in the tragic incident 18 years ago. The President and the First Lady will also attend the official function to mark the occasion this morning. They will also join hands with the island residents in a show of unity to celebrate the camaraderie displayed by Maldivians in the face of the 2004 tragedy.

During the visit, President Solih will also meet with the members of the island council and the Women’s Development Committee. The President and First Lady are scheduled to conclude their visit and return to Malé later this evening.
