President Mohamed Nasheed condemned today the recent string of violent attacks in the capital.
The President said he was “shocked and appalled” by the incidents and has asked Minister of Home Affairs Mohamed Shihab to afford the matter a high priority.

Commenting on the issue, Press Secretary Mohamed Zuhair thanked the Maldives Police Service for the ongoing measures they are taking to uphold law and order, after the recent spate of stabbings in Male’.

Zuhair urged members of the Peoples’ Majlis to expedite the passage of pending criminal justice bills "so the police can effectively tackle the scourge of street violence in our country."

The government has sent a number of bills relating to violence and crime to the People’s Majlis including: a Bill Against Gang Related Crimes; a Bill Against Anti-Social Behaviour; and an Evidence Bill; as well as a Bill on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.
