President Mohamed Nasheed today attended a function held to mark the first "World Statistics Day". The function was held this morning at HolidayInn Hotel.
The President’s address was mainly on the importance of the availability of valid information for the development of a country.
The President said although proper information was kept largely ‘confidential’ in the past, the current Constitution provided for the right to information. The President, in particular, noted valid statistical data on employment were required at the moment in the Maldives.
He said modern technologies such as SMS must be utilised in disseminating statistical information, adding that “data should not be kept secret”.
Before his address, the President launched a new SMS service, which will provide statistical provide.
The Vice President launched Maldives Third MDG report, and Special Envoy of the President Ibrahim Hussain Zaki launched the Maldives Statistical Year Book 2010.
World Statistic Day is being marked to acknowledge the contributions of statistics toward informing public policy and improving human welfare.
