A delegation of senior officials of the government of Mauritius paid a courtesy call on President Mohamed Nasheed today. The delegation was led by Secretary to Cabinet and Head of the Civil Service of Mauritius Mr S. C. Seeballuck and Ambassador of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade Mr J. D. Koonjul.
Discussions at the meeting, held at the President’s Office this afternoon, were focused on strengthening the existing bilateral relations and exploring areas for further cooperation between the Maldives and Mauritius.
Noting the Mauritian expertise in operating major sea ports, the President spoke on the possibility of establishing an international shipping link between Mauritius and the South of Maldives.
The President also spoke on the importance of the support of Mauritius for the government’s efforts to widen the role of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) in global climate change debate.
Furthermore, President Nasheed briefed the Mauritian delegation on the claim made by the Maldives at the UN for its extended continental shelf area.
At the meeting, Mauritius delegation highlighted the importance of more cooperation between both countries in the area of tourism. They also expressed the desire to hold further discussions between both governments on potential areas of cooperation highlighted in today’s meeting.
The meeting was also attended by Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed, the President’s Political Affairs Advisor Hassan Afeef and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Ahmed Shaheed.
