Office of the National Security Advisor (NSA) has confirmed that there is no clear and present danger of radiation to the Maldives from the explosion at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant which was badly damaged by Friday’s earthquake and tsunami.

A statement issued by the Office of the NSA said President Mohamed Nasheed has asked the Office to investigate the possibility of a threat of radiation to the Maldives from the damage to Fukushima nuclear facility.

The statement said a committee is set up with officials from the Maldives Meteorological Service, Department of Public Health, Ministry of Health and Family, and the Office of the NSA at the President’s Office to study the possibility of a radiation hazard to the Maldives from the incidents.

The statement said the radiation leakages from the plant posed no threat of a radiation hazard in the Maldives and therefore were no cause for public concern.

Further, in the statement, the committee assured that it would continue to monitor the nuclear crisis in Japan for its implications to the Maldives.

It added that the committee has been seeking the advice of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and World Health Organisation (WHO) regarding the situation.
