President Mohamed Nasheed has sent condolences to President of the United States of America Barack Obama following the passing away of former US First Lady Betty Ford.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of former First Lady of the United States, Mrs Betty Ford. Mrs Ford’s service to the people of America extended beyond her term as the First Lady. She shall be remembered for her role in addressing major social challenges such as healthcare issues and women’s rights.
On this sad occasion of grief, the Government and the people of the Maldives join me in extending our profound sympathy to you, the Government and the people of the United States of America.

Mrs Ford passed away last night in California. She was 93.
