President Mohamed Nasheed has visited Noonu Atoll Maafaru and met with Maafaru Island Council today.

At the meeting with Maafaru Island Council, the President urged the councillors to draw up a work plan for council administration and councils activities and functions in the island.

He also asked the council to consult with the residents and include their participation in matters related to them and the development of the island.

Underlining the transfer of land titles held by the state in the islands to island councils, the President urged the council to formulate a land use plan in order to maximise the economic benefit of the land for the people.

In addition, he requested council to work with the island’s school management and the people to improve the standard of education and pass rate of the school.

The President also exchanged views with the council on the government’s programmes for the island’s development.

The President made the visit to Maafaru as part of his tours to meet island councils to discuss necessary arrangements to deliver government services and programmes through island councils.

The President has returned to Male’ after concluding his visit to Eydhafushi, Kudafaree and Maafaru.
